Architecture in Siwa

Siwa is known for its traditional houses made of earth/salt (kershef) with palm and olive wood roofs, but now most homes are of standard Egyptian building materials – breeze block covered in concrete, some red brick, with concrete floors and planed timber ceilings. Most homes are simple rectangular boxes, but there are some interesting variations in design, and even a shiny but out of place looking “villa” at the end of my street – I don’t envy the wife who must keep the glass front clean in this desert dust blown place.
